Jan 18, 2012, 9:11 GMT
Kiev - Ukraine's former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, on Tuesday received a massage for back pain in jail where she is serving a seven-year sentence on abuse of power charges, prison officials said.
Tymoshenko, now the country's opposition leader, underwent a the treatment by her personal masseuse that lasted 'a few hours,' the Unian news agency said, quoting a spokesman at the prison in the Kharkiv province, 410 kilometres east of the capital Kiev.
Tymoshenko, one of the leaders of Ukraine's 2004 pro-democracy Orange Revolution, was sentenced in October. She denied any wrongdoing and said the case was politically motivated and part of a campaign against the opposition.
The European Union criticized the trial as unfair and put off a wide-ranging agreement with Ukraine.
According to Tymoshenko's legal team, she is unable to walk without assistance because of back injuries. Prison medical staff have said she is generally healthy but should exercise more.
