Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti to be president of Cannes festival

Paris - Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti has been named president of the jury of this year's Cannes film festival, the festival organizers announced Friday.
Moretti is one of Italy's best-known directors, who often stars in his own films.
In 2001, he won Cannes' top prize, the Palme d'Or, with The Son's Room.
In recent years the leftist director emerged as a fierce critic of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who was the subject of his scathing 2006 biopic The Caiman.
In a statement issued by the festival Moretti said it was 'a real joy, an honour and a tremendous responsibility to preside over the jury of the most prestigious festival of cinematography in the world, a festival that is held in a country where film has always been treated with interest and respect.'
Thierry Fremaux, general delegate of the festival, said the festival had wanted to name a European president for its 65th edition.
The festival runs from May 16 to 27.
