Schalke's Hoewedes sidelined with cheek-bone fracture
Jan 21, 2012, 17:56 GMT
Gelsenkirchen, Germany - Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes is sidelined for several weeks with a cheek-bone fracture, the Bundesliga club said on Saturday.
Hoewedes sustained the injury in the first half of Schalke's 3-1 victory against VfB Stuttgart when he collided with team-mate Marco Hoeger. The defender was taken to hospital where the nature of the injury was diagnosed.
'He will undergo surgery on Monday. We hope he won't be sidelined for a long time, but that depends on the healing process,' said Schalke sports director Horst Heldt.
Heldt said that second-placed Schalke may sign another defender during the January transfer window if Hoewedes will be out of action for a longer period.
