Germany defender Hoewedes undergoes surgery on cheekbone fractures

Gelsenkirchen, Germany - Germany defender Benedikt Hoewedes underwent surgery on a triple cheekbone fracture on Monday but it remains unclear how long he will be sidelined, his Bundesliga club Schalke said.
Schalke said that their captain Hoewedes will get a protective mask once the swelling on his face has gone. He could then return make a quick return to training, the club said.
Hoewedes sustained the injury on Saturday when he collided with team-mate Marco Hoeger during Schalke's 3-1 Bundesliga win over VfB Stuttgart. Schalke are third in the league, tied on points with leaders Bayern Munich and champions Borussia Dortmund.
