Official: Russian opposition leader banned from presidential vote
Jan 24, 2012, 14:56 GMT
Moscow - A leading opposition politician has been barred from running in Russia's upcoming presidential election because of alleged irregularities in his application to be registered as a candidate, government officials said Tuesday.
Russia's Central Election Commission (CEC) had taken the decision to ban Grigory Yavlinsky's name from election ballots because almost a quarter of the signatures in petitions needed to register him were invalid, said CEC secretary Nikolai Konkin, according to an Interfax news agency report.
Yavlinksy heads the anti-government Yabloko (Apple) party. Russia's presidential election is on March 4.
