Moscow - Six men died and three more were injured in fighting between Russian army units and suspected insurgents in the Caucasus region on Friday, the Interfax news agency reported.
Russian troops killed three alleged anti-government fighters during an early morning house raid in a village in the territory of Ingushetia, some 1,480 kilometres to the south of the capital Moscow.
One of the dead was Dzhamaleyl Mutaliyev, a rebel forces senior commander, the report said, citing army officers.
In the neighbouring territory of Dagestan, three Russian soldiers were killed and two more injured in a clash with suspected insurgents.
The firefight took place in Dagestan's forested Kizlyarsk district, some 1,550 kilometres from Moscow, Interfax reported.
