Georgian leader visits White House amid NATO bid

Washington - US President Barack Obama on Monday hosted Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili at the White House as the Caucasus nation seeks NATO membership.
'We are grateful for your support for our NATO aspirations,' Saakashvili said at a joint press conference. 'We are very grateful for elevating our defence cooperation further.'
Georgia has nearly 1,000 troops among the 50-nation coalition in Afghanistan.
The breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia remain a sticking point between Georgia and neighbouring Russia, which culminated in an armed conflict in 2008.
