Polish match called off at Euro 2012 venue amid safety concerns
Feb 3, 2012, 12:05 GMT
Warsaw - Poland's National Stadium in Warsaw, a key venue for this summer's Euro 2012 games, is not ready to host a Polish match this month due to safety concerns, the city's officials said on Friday.
The venue is not ready for the Polish SuperCup match on February 11, which officials said was an event of 'heightened risk.'
Two bitter rivals were to play at the game - Wisla Krakow and Legia Warsaw - who included rowdy fans on both sides.
The stadium was to have been ready by September, but it experienced an array of construction delays before it finally held its opening ceremony on Sunday.
Officials said the stadium 'did not meet safety requirements,' and police, fire and sanitation inspectors all had objections. Police pointed out there were no barriers to separate fans of the opposing teams.
Poland is co-hosting Euro 2012 with neighbouring Ukraine. Both countries have experienced delays in building infrastructure to accommodate the expected thousands of football fans.
