Spanish artist Antoni Tapies dies at 88
Feb 7, 2012, 8:35 GMT
Madrid - Spanish painter and sculptor Antoni Tapies, regarded as one of the most important artists of the 20th century, died late Monday in Barcelona, his family said.
Tapies, who was 88, had been in frail health for some time.
He began painting in 1945 after breaking off his law studies.
Initially influenced by Spanish avant-garde artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and Salvador Dali, Tapies gradually developed a unique style which was characterized by a 'crossroads between physicality and a spiritual dimension,' as the daily El Pais put it.
Tapies saw the sublime in the simplest things, ranging from a sock to armpit hair.
Culture Minister Jose Ignacio Wert described him as 'one of the most prominent figures of Spanish art in the second half of the 20th century.'
