Two Serbian hitmen attempt escape from Belgrade prison
Feb 7, 2012, 11:15 GMT
Belgrade - Two professional killers involved in high-profile political assassinations in the Balkans tried but failed to escape from prison, the Serbian Justice Ministry said on Tuesday.
Sretko Kalinic and Zeljko Milovanovic managed to leave their cells before dawn and reached the prison's courtyard where they were arrested, the ministry said in a statement.
Kalinic, 38, is serving 30 years for taking part in the 2003 murder of Zoran Djindjic, Serbia's first democratically elected prime minister. The organized-crime henchman was also sentenced for other killings.
Milovanovic, 43, was sentenced to 40 years in Croatia for the 2008 killing of Croatian journalist Ivo Pukanic, who broke stories on links between politicians and organized crime gangs in the Balkans.
He is being investigated and tried in connection with other crimes, including war crimes and executions across the Balkans.
The squad in charge of guarding Kalinic and Milovanovic in the Belgrade district prison has been suspended while police investigate the escape attempt, the statement said.
