Freezing temperatures delay work at Euro 2012 venue in Poland
Feb 7, 2012, 12:06 GMT
Warsaw - Freezing temperatures are delaying work at Warsaw's National Stadium as workers struggled to roll out grass turf in time for this weekend's inaugural match, the Polish Super Cup, the daily Wyborcza reported Tuesday.
Rolls of grass turf had to be imported from the Netherlands because Polish grass had frozen and could not be rolled up at the venue of the opening and other games of Euro 2012, the daily said.
Officials were hoping to get the stadium ready in time for Saturday's game between bitter rivals Warsaw Legia and Wisla Krakow.
Warsaw city officials and police had denied organizers permission to host the match amid safety concerns. But organizers were hoping to get the permits at the last minute before Saturday's game.
The stadium was to be completed in September, but experienced an array of construction delays before it finally held its opening ceremony last month.
Poland is co-hosting Euro 2012 with neighboring Ukraine. Both countries have experienced delays in building infrastructure to accommodate the expected thousands of football fans.
