Germany advises Maldives tourists to avoid Male
Feb 7, 2012, 12:56 GMT
Berlin - Germany's Foreign Office advised tourists in the Maldives Tuesday to avoid Male, the island where the capital is located, after President Mohamed Nasheed resigned amid unrest.
However it said other islands in the group, including the atoll where the international airport is located, appeared calm.
The statement said visits to Male should be avoided because of the current political crisis and demonstrations that were sometimes violent. The Maldives Tourism Ministry said earlier tourists normally only visit the city if they book day trips there.
The German Travel Federation says more than 77,000 Germans spend holidays in the Maldives every year. Only about 200 of the 1,190 islands in the archipelago are inhabited.
