Djokovic: Paris and London priorities, Davis Cup in doubt
Feb 8, 2012, 13:41 GMT
Belgrade - World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic said Wednesday the French Open and Olympic Games were his priorities for 2012, but that the Serbian Davis Cup team might have to do without him.
'The season will be difficult, with many important matches,' he told reporters in Belgrade. 'If I have to single something out, it is Rolan Garros, the Grand Slam I still don't have, and Olympics in London, where I want to win a gold medal with all my heart,'
Djokovic said a 'dense schedule' puts his participation in the Davis Cup in question. Serbia, the 2010 Davis Cup winner, hosts Sweden February 10-12 in the first round of this year's Cup without Djokovic.
'The Davis Cup is the only team competition in tennis where we can first represent our country and then ourselves,' he said. 'Whether I will take part this year - I cannot say in advance.'
Djokovic stressed that he is happy to be able to represent Serbia 'as it is, in a most beautiful way,' after the 'undeserved negative publicity it had in recent years.'
An absolute superhero in his country, Djokovic said that he follows politics and is well informed, but was 'without political ambitions at the moment.'
He refused to comment a jibe from Ante Kostelic, father of Croatian alpine superstar siblings Janica and Ivica, who a day earlier said that 'anybody,' including Djokovic, can play tennis,' but few can ski.
But he did say that 'I plan to do something I haven't done in seven years - go skiing with friends on Kopaonik,' Serbia's top ski resort.
The Serb, who firmly sits on top of ATP rankings, won four out of he last five Grand Slam tournaments - he stumbled in the French Open semi-final against Roger Federer.
