LEAD: Moenchengladbach, second division Fuerth into German cup semis
Feb 8, 2012, 20:34 GMT
Berlin - Borussia Moenchengladbach continued their remarkable season with a place in the German cup semi-finals on Wednesday and were joined there by second division Greuther Fuerth.
Moenchengladbach won 2-0 in extra time at Hertha Berlin, the former club of their coach Lucien Favre, while Fuerth ambushed hosting Hoffenheim 1-0.
Filip Daems converted a 102nd-minute penalty for Moenchengladbach, with Hertha's Roman Hubnik harshly sent off on the occasion for allegedly head-butting Igor de Camargo. Oscar Wendt wrapped up matters in the 120th on the counter.
Hertha failed again to make the final set for May 12 in their home stadium. They were unlucky in the 62nd when Peter Niemeyer's longe-range effort hit the right post, and Adrian Ramos aimed high just before Moenchengladbach's second.
Moenchengladbach are enjoying a great season, placed fourth in the Bundesliga three points shy of leaders Borussia Dortmund after almost being relegated last season.
Fuerth's Canadian forward Olivier Occean grabbed the winner in Hoffenheim from short range after rounding two defenders in the 44th, eight minutes after home team defender Marvin Compper was sent off for hitting Stephan Fuerstner in the face.
Hoffenheim were the second Bundesliga club to lose at home against Fuerth, who rank fourth in the second division and want to get into the top flight after several near misses. Fuerth won 1-0 in Nuremberg in the previous round and are yet to concede a goal in four cup games.
The Bundesliga champions Dortmund reached the semis, set for March 20 and 21 on Tuesday 4-0 at fourth division Holstein Kiel. Bayern Munich were at VfB Stuttgart in the late game Wednesday.
