DFB ponders mandatory undersoil heating in cup games
Feb 9, 2012, 10:09 GMT
Frankfurt - The German football federation DFB is pondering making undersoil heating mandatory for cup games in winter after harsh criticism from Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp.
Dortmund won a cup match at fourth division Holstein Kiel in midweek, but Klopp complained about the frozen pitch and said that such matches must be played elsewhere if the club in question doesn't have undersoil heating because 'the injury risk was much too big.'
Designated DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach told Thursday's edition of the Bild daily that officials were discussing the issue.
'We must think about rule changes if the calendar allows quarter-final games only in February,' Niersbach said.
Undersoil heating is only mandatory for Bundesliga and second division clubs in Germany.
