LEAD: Minnows Siena stun Napoli in Italian Cup semi
Feb 9, 2012, 22:27 GMT
Rome - Underdogs Siena beat guests Napoli 2-1 on Thursday in a first leg of the Italian Cup semi-finals.
Brazilian Reginaldo put the Tuscany hosts ahead late in the first half, and Gaetano D'Agostino scored a second goal to secure the win despite an own goal from Emanuele Pesoli.
Reginaldo had the better of Hugo Campagnaro on 42 minutes as he stormed toward goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis and stunned him with a deft lob.
Napoli on 57 minutes brought on Argentine Ezequiel Lavezzi, who promptly threatened with a narrowly wide volley, but Siena scored again with D'Agostino's deflection off a cross from substitute Franco Brienza.
The guests increased their tempo but needed an unlucky deflection from Pesoli to pull one back with eight minutes left.
Edinson Cavani hit a post before the own goal, and Campagnaro shook the woodwork with an injury-time header.
'We are sorry about this result,' said Napoli Uruguayan Walter Gargano. 'We deserved more, and I am sorry for the fans that followed us all the way from Naples. Siena played a great game. We tried all we could. We still scored a goal, which is important for us. In the second leg, we hope not to concede goals.'
Juventus, who were held to a scoreless league draw by Siena at the weekend, won 2-1 at AC Milan in the other semi-final on Wednesday.
Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres scored a brace for the Serie A leaders as he returned to the Turin side in January after a season at Spanish side Sevilla.
The second-leg games are scheduled for March 21.
