Dortmund general manager Watzke stays on until 2016
Feb 13, 2012, 10:46 GMT
Dortmund - Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund have renewed the contract of managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke until 2016, two weeks after coach Juergen Klopp and sports director Michael Zorc also agreed to stay at the club until then.
Dortmund president Reinhard Rauball said in a statement on Monday that the contract extension for Watzke, whose original deal was until 2014, was the latest step to 'continue the successful development of the past years.'
Watzke took the job in 2005 when Dortmund were close to bankruptcy. The club has achieved a financial and sporting turnaround, won a first league title since 2002 last season and is top of the table again now.
'It is a big honour to work for this great club,' said Watzke.
The contract extensions of the club top officials and Klopp could be a signal to players as well as Dortmund seek long-term renewals of the deals of Mario Goetze, Shinji Kagawa and others.
