Berlin - World Cup holder and leader Ivica Kostelic was to undergo surgery on a meniscus injury on Monday amid uncertainty whether he can return to skiing this season.
The Croatian ski federation said on its website that a torn meniscus in his right was confirmed in Basle, Switzerland. Kostelic sustained the injury during a super-combined race in Sochi, Russia on Sunday.
Kostelic, 32, won the World Cup last season and leads the current standings with 1,043 points from Switzerland's Beat Feuz, who has 973.
The Croatian ski federation statement did not say when Kostelic can ski again. Kostelic has been plagued by knee injuries in his career.
