Former agriculture ministers convicted of corruption in Romania
Feb 14, 2012, 12:56 GMT
Bucharest - A Romanian court on Tuesday sentenced two former agriculture ministers to three years in prison after finding them guilty of corruption, the Mediafax news agency reported.
Decebal Traian Remes and Ioan Avram Muresan can appeal and will not go to prison before the verdict is upheld.
Remes, who served in 2007, was found guilty of taking a 15,000-euro (20,000 dollars) bribe from a construction company seeking favours. The mediator in the deal was Muresan, who was minister in 1998-2000.
A former prime minister, Adrian Nastase, was sentenced to two years for corruption in January, but has also not yet run out of appeals.
Romania joined the European Union alongside Bulgaria in 2007. Both countries have been struggling to bring their justice systems and the fight against corruption up to European standards.
