UN chief to meet with top Russian diplomat on Syria, Iran
Feb 14, 2012, 18:56 GMT
New York - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Vienna to discuss the situation in Syria and Iran's nuclear programme, an Israeli diplomat said Tuesday.
Ban is scheduled to visit Vienna Wednesday for meetings with Austrian government officials and UN organizations on nuclear disarmament.
Israel's Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom met Ban at UN headquarters in New York and told reporters afterward that Ban maintains 'ongoing efforts to stop the Iranians' from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Shalom said he discussed with Ban the recent attacks against Israeli diplomats in New Delhi and Tbilisi, which Israel blamed on the Iranian government.
'The secretary general was shocked and condemned the attacks,' Shalom said. 'We know that Iran and its collaborators are behind the attacks.'
