Villar re-elected as president of Spanish federation
Feb 16, 2012, 18:18 GMT
Madrid - Angel Maria Villar was on Thursday elected to his seventh term as president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF) until 2016.
Villar, 62, who was the only candidate, has presided over the RFEF since 1988, which makes him one of the longest-reigning officials in world football history.
At the RFEF's assembly in Madrid, Villar earned 161 out of 179 votes. Only in 2004 a rival candidate, Gerardo Gonzalez, emerged to challenge Villar, albeit unsuccessfully.
Villar - who was a skilful midfielder for Athletic Bilbao and Spain in the 1970s - has become a popular figure in Spanish football because of the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2008 triumphs, in addition to countless success for Spain at youth and junior level.
He is also a vice president of the world governing body FIFA and the European federation UEFA.
