Hirscher wins giant slalom after Ligety slips

Bansko, Bulgaria - Marcel Hirscher of Austria captured the men's World Cup giant slalom in Bansko Saturday after a mistake by first-run leader Ted Ligety of the United States.
Hirscher posted 2 minutes 25.35 seconds for the two runs, beating Italy's Massimiliano Blardone by 1.39 seconds to take the lead over Ligety in the discipline standings.
Austrian 20-year-old Marcel Mathis was third for his first World Cup podium place after lying 26th in the first run.
It was a seventh World Cup win of the season for Hirscher who moves to within 118 points of overall World Cup leader Ivica Kostelic (1,043), with Beat Feuz of Switzerland lying second on 973
Ligety's chances slipped away 10 seconds into his second run when he lost his grip and and missed a gate.
He managed to finish but had to make do with 27th place and was overtaken by Hirscher in the discipline standings with three giant slaloms remaining.
A men's slalom is scheduled at the venue Sunday.
