Russia wants Red Cross to organize Syrian ceasefires
Feb 22, 2012, 10:27 GMT
Moscow - Russia supports efforts by the International Red Cross to organize daily ceasefires between the Syrian regime and opposition forces, a senior Russian Foreign Ministry official said on Wednesday.
The ceasefires should last two hours and would be used to give humanitarian aid to the Syrian population, said Aleksandr Lukashevich, Foreign Ministry spokesman, according to an Interfax news agency report.
'We hope that this idea will be supported generally,' Lukashevich said. 'We are actively behind the efforts of the International Red Cross to do this.'
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday called for the United Nations leadership to send a special envoy to Damascus to facilitate the delivery of internationally donated food and fuel shipments to Syrians.
