Otto Rehhagel picked for convention to elect German president
Feb 23, 2012, 14:14 GMT
Berlin - Hertha Berlin coach Otto Rehhagel will be part of a federal convention to elect Germany's next president on March 18.
Berlin's Christian Democrats (CDU) said in a statement on Thursday that Rehhagel has been named into their group of seven in the 1,240-strong convention. Joachim Gauck is the only candidate for the presidency after last week's resignation of Christian Wulff.
Rehhagel, 73, was also part of the federal convention in 1999 when Johannes Rau was elected president.
Rehhagel was appointed Hertha coach last weekend with the task of saving the Bundesliga club from relegation. He led Greece to a surprise Euro 2004 title and has also won Bundesliga titles with Werder Bremen and Kaiserslautern.
