Prague - A homeless man in Prague saved a newborn baby from its certain death when he found the child in a plastic bag dumped in a garbage container, police said Thursday.

The baby boy, who still had his umbilical cord attached, was immediately taken to a hospital, where he remains in a critical condition, police said.

Detectives are now looking for the baby's mother, who could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of attempted murder.

Several Czech hospitals have in recent years started operating so- called baby boxes, in which mothers can legally place unwanted babies.

So far Czechs have handed in nine babies in this way, the CTK news agency reported.
