E coli spinach outbreak claims two more victims: reports

Sep 22, 2006, 18:35 GMT

San Francisco - An E coli outbreak blamed on tainted spinach produce has claimed the lives of two more people, according to news reports Friday.

The victims were an 86-year-old woman from Maryland and a two-year old Idaho boy, who died after eating fresh spinach and becoming infected with E-coli.

The US Food and Drug Administration, in a statement Friday, made no mention of the two reported deaths but said there was an 'ongoing investigation.'

The FDA acknowledged only one death last week related to the E coli outbreak, in which more than 150 people in 23 states have fallen ill.

Since the outbreak emerged last week, three companies have been forced to recall products containing spinach as investigators try to track down the source of the infection.

The probe is centred on nine massive farms in central California's Salinas Valley, which is the source of 75 per cent of the US spinach crop. One leading theory is that irrigation waters have been tainted by cattle manure seeping into surrounding streams, but investigators have still not isolated the source of the outbreak.

So hasn't ANYONE proposed a simple solution to all this hysteria - namely: COOK THE SPINACH! Has the entire country forgotten how to boil water?

Thoroughly cooking the spinach does indeed kill the bacteria, but handling the infected product often leads to contamination of hands and other surfaces. I don't know that I'd want to spread pathogenic E. coli around my kitchen.

Im sorry but Ive learned from my foods safty and sanitation class that boiling a product with e coli doesnt kill the bactera all the way also E coli is deadly and why would you want to take that risk in handeling it?

It's fine for people to say 'COOK IT THOROUGHLY' but the problem with salad items such as lettuce, watercress, water chestnuts, mushrooms, bean sprouts, cabbage, and of course Spinach, is that you don't have a sald anymore if you cook it.

How many people enjoy a salad made of cooked lettuce and spinach? Anyone??

I know I'm in the minority but I'm actually one of the victims; I was buying close-to-off dates discounted 'organic' bags as treats for my equines.

Pardon me for having equines, and pardon me for trusting labels.

Has anyone thought of the technological breakdown behind all of this? It's fascinating.

Victims of spinach? Think about it.

Good luck to you all, and thanks for your wishes in advance.

I give up. Why is it always healthy food that get tainted? Remember the raspberry scare. When are pork rinds going to be dangerous? Try so hard to feed the kids well, you're better off with fast food..

Hahhahaha yea that is why the fast food hamburgers killed people a couple years ago...

The other issue is most people on steam and do not really cook the stuff to death which means it is still likely to be a problem.

We live in a polluted world and it will problably only increase. We want more and more convenience and we are paying the price for it. The more food you can grow at home, the better.

So did POPEYE get ill from this?Sep 23rd, 2006 - 22:07:09

Did Popeye get killed because of this? Of course, Noam Chomsky types would say it's just a big conspiracy. Kinda like how Wimpy faked hamburger addiction as part of counterintelligence operations. Anyway, I wouldn't put it past them. It's not like something you wouldn't see at http://www.snopes.com
