Food poisoning epidemic in Sarajevo ends
May 13, 2007, 12:33 GMT
Sarajevo - Officials from the Sarajevo Clinic Hospital said Sunday that the epidemic of salmonella poisoning in the Bosnian capital ended last night after more than 800 patients were treated in the last four days.
A total of 194 people were hospitalized, while more than 600 had been medically checked and sent home since Wednesday when the epidemic broke out, spokeswoman Biljana Jandric said.
All the patients were under 20 years old, and were mostly students from several schools in downtown Sarajevo who had eaten in the same restaurant.
The young patients had eaten chicken sandwiches in a popular fast food and pizza restaurant in the city centre, and were probably poisoned with salmonella from the chicken meat or mayonnaise.
The massive food-poisoning outbreak in Sarajevo was the largest in the last decade, the hospital confirmed.
