New Zealand hospital says thief replaced pain killer with water
Aug 26, 2008, 6:56 GMT
Wellington - A New Zealand hospital called in police Tuesday after discovering that someone had stolen patients' pain relief medication and replaced it with water, news reports said.
The Canterbury District Health Board, which controls Christchurch Hospital, gave no details of the thefts, but Radio New Zealand said morphine - widely used to ease pain for cancer patients - or another synthetic narcotic was probably involved.
It was not known how many patients were affected or how long medication tampering had been going on.
The board said it had stepped up security.
