China reports second 2009 bird flu fatality
Jan 19, 2009, 2:21 GMT
Beijing - A 27-year-old woman has died of avian flu in eastern China, becoming the second bird flu fatality this month in the country, Shandong provincial health officials said Sunday.
The victim lived in the provincial capital, Jinan, China's official Xinhua news agency reported.
The woman became ill on January 5 and sought treatment at a hospital when her influenza symptoms worsened. She died Saturday evening.
Central government health officials confirmed that she was infected with the H5N1 bird flu strain.
A 19-year-old woman died of bird flu on January 5 in Beijing.
China has had three human cases of bird flu infection this year, including a 2-year-old girl in critical condition in Shanxi Province.
The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture said that the country faces a 'grim situation' in preventing avian flu, amid frequent outbreaks in China's neighboring countries. The poultry industry and household livestock being kept with disease-control practices worsen the problem.
