Cold weather sends blood pressure among 65-year-olds soaring
Feb 2, 2009, 2:09 GMT
Hamburg - When temperatures drop, blood pressure rises, increasing the risk of heart disease in the elderly, a study of people over the age of 65 showed recently.
While blood pressure among young people rises in colder weather, it normalizes after a few minutes. In older people, conversely, high blood pressure continues, according to the study, which was conducted in France and reported in a German magazine for physicians.
The researchers regularly measured the early morning blood pressure of nearly 9,000 people over the age of 65 over a two-year period. The increased blood pressure in the cold months occurred among participants in the study who spent the entire night in their homes.
