Smoking exacerbates progress of Crohn's disease
Feb 23, 2009, 2:08 GMT
Hamburg - The progress of Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines, exacerbates dramatically in smokers, according to a professor at Goethe University in Frankfurt.
Smokers, who contract Crohn's disease, must undergo surgery and suffer the dangerous advanced stages of the disease more commonly than non-smokers, said Professor Axel Dignass at a recent congress of Europe's Crohn disease and colitis organization in Hamburg. In most people with Crohn's disease the last section of the small intestine is affected.
The cause of the disease has not been completely understood. A genetic disposition combined with environmental factors such as nutrition, stress, poor hygiene or the pill are considered likely.

It's incorrect and ignorant articles like this that make it so much harder for those of us who suffer with Crohn's disease. How dare you say that poor hygiene is a contributing factor!! It's hard enough battling with the condition, and trying to make those around you understand what it involves without some utter tripe like this being published and putting false information out there. I suggest you sack your researchers!!!
Please please find a health research who actually looks at the evidence before writing!! This article has enraged me, there is NO evidence that environmental factors can cause Crohn's disease, and this article only goes to further fuel to misunderstanding and embarrassment that can surround this painful and serious AUTOIMMUNE disease.
If you can say Crohn's, an auto immune disease can be caused by poor hygiene you may as well add every other auto immune disease out there to that list too that includes rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Coeliac disease.
I was frankly disappointed at the misinformation in this article.
It says a genetic disposition combined with environmental factors are thought likely causes...not that it is definitely caused by poor hygiene.
The disease is not fully understood. Get a grip.
im guessing JOE doesnt suffer with crohns

This article absolutely disgusts me. How you can say environmental factors such as poor hygene can cause crohns is appauling. Crohns is an auto immune disease and is certainly not as a result of poor hygene! Its hard enough to make others understand the nature of this disease without incorrect ignorent articles such as this!
