May 16, 2009, 13:44 GMT
Istanbul - An American man in transit through Turkey on his way to Iraq has been hospitalized in Turkey's first recorded case of swine flu, officials said Saturday.
The infected man, aged 27, was spotted when thermal cameras recorded his temperature as elevated while he was at Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport, Turkey's health ministry said.
A blood test proved positive for the A(H1N1) virus, or swine flu. The man's wife also tested positive for infection.
The US citizen, originally from Iraq, was on his way to Iraq via Amsterdam and Istanbul. His flight touched down in Turkey on Friday. There were more than 160 other passengers on his flight. All those who came into recent contact with him are being observed and treated with medication.
