Number of Mexican swine flu deaths rises to 89
May 27, 2009, 20:06 GMT
Mexico City - The number of deaths in Mexico as a result of the A(H1N1) influenza virus has risen to 89, Mexico's Health Ministry said Wednesday.
Confirmed infections from the so-called swine flu virus totalled 4,910.
'There are very few cases in which the start of symptoms is recent,' health officials stressed.
Mexico publicly acknowledged the presence of the hitherto unknown virus on April 23.
The authorities then launched a series of strict measures to hinder the spread of the disease, including the suspension of school lessons, the cancellation of mass events and even a ban on Mexico City restaurants from serving food on their premises.
The neighbouring US has reported 7,927 cases as of Wednesday, with 11 deaths.
