Malaysian state tells students overseas to delay return
Jun 29, 2009, 10:04 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - A senior official from Malaysia's eastern Sarawak state on Borneo appealed Monday to its students studying abroad, particularly in Australia, to delay their return home as a measure to contain the spread of swine flu.
The plea by state deputy chief minister George Chan came after Sarawak recorded four H1N1 cases, including three students from Australia and an Australian tourist.
'Those studying overseas, especially in high-risk countries, including Australia, are advised not to come back until everything is over,' Chan was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.
Malaysia, which has so far recorded more than 100 cases of swine flu infections in locals and foreigners, has increased the use of body thermal scanners at airports.
The World Health Organization has declared swine flu a pandemic, with more than 60,000 cases being reported worldwide.
