South Korea increases swine flu warning level
Jul 21, 2009, 12:00 GMT
Seoul - South Korean health authorities increased their swine flu warning to the second highest level Tuesday because of the rapid spread of the illness.
'The number of flu cases has been increasing with a steady influx of foreign students during summer vacation,' the Health Ministry in Seoul said. The ministry added that the number of infections among South Korean students was also increasing.
Raising the warning level from three on a scale of four means moving away from the policy of containment and isolation towards one of damage limitation, according to the ministry.
Dozens of new cases of the H1N1 virus are being reported almost daily in South Korea. According to official figures, there have been 935 confirmed cases to date. The first case in the country was reported in early May.
The World Health Organization categorized the outbreak as a pandemic in June.
