Aug 12, 2009, 10:40 GMT
New Delhi - Authorities in India's financial hub Mumbai on Wednesday ordered all schools and universities closed for one week, fearing a spread of the H1N1 swine flu virus.
Students were asked to stay home for seven days starting on Thursday, the IANS news agency reported. Shopping malls and cinemas in the capital of Maharashtra state were closed down for three days.
Mumbai and the surrounding region is home to about 20 million people.
Already on Monday, schools were closed in the city of Pune, 160 kilometres south-west of Mumbai because of a rising number of swine-flu infections.
Government officials reported 1,000 swine-flu infections in India. Fifteen people died, 11 of them in Maharashtra. dpa stm im tl
