British authorities probe death of girl after anti-cancer jab
Sep 29, 2009, 8:07 GMT
London - British health authorities launched an investigation Tuesday into the death of a 14-year-old girl just hours after she had been given an injection to protect her against cervical cancer.
The girl, who collapsed soon after receiving the HPV1 Ceravix jab at a school in Coventry, in the English Midlands, had taken part in a nationwide programme to protect teenagers from cervical cancer.
Several other girls at the school felt unwell after being given the injection, of which more than 1.4 million have been administered in Britain so far. Surveys show a majority of parents are reluctant to consent to the innoculation.
The vaccine protects against two strains of sexually transmitted human papillomavirus that cause more than 70 per cent of cases of cervical cancer in women. It is given to girls aged between 12 and 18. About 1,000 women die of the disease every year.
