Siamese twins stable after operation in London hospital
Apr 8, 2010, 14:30 GMT
London - Siamese twins dubbed 'the little fighters' by their parents have been successfully separated in an operation at a leading children's hospital in London, doctors said Thursday.
The parents of Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf said in a statement: 'The sun is shining today for our two little fighters, who have won the battle of their lives.'
Angie and Azzedine Benhaffaf, who live in Cork, in the south of Ireland, thanked the 20-strong team of surgeons at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, as well as the 'Irish nation' for their support.
The twins, who were born on December 2, were joined at the chest but did not share any major organs, doctors said.
Confirming that the 14-hour operation had been successful, consultant paediatric surgeon Edward Kieley said: 'The twins are in intensive care and are sedated but stable. We are pleased with how the operation went.'
