Philippines launches vaccination drive against swine flu
Apr 26, 2010, 11:06 GMT
Manila - The Philippines' Health Department on Monday launched a vaccination drive to protect the country's health workers against a possible resurgence of swine flu.
The campaign would initially vaccinate 420,000 health workers around the country, the department said.
'Hopefully, we shall have vaccinated all health workers by next week to protect them against A-H1N1,' said Dr Lyndon Leesuy, manager of the department's emerging and re-emerging diseases programme.
Lessuy said that after health workers were immunized, the department would also immunize 2.5 million pregnant women who are vulnerable to the virus.
He stressed that swine flu remained a threat to public health, especially when the rainy season comes in July.
'There's no report of clustering of cases yet, but it does not mean that the threat of a second wave is no longer there,' he said. 'We should always be on guard.'
Last year, six people died and more than 3,000 fell ill from swine flu in the Philippines, according to the World Health Organization.
