One third of parents consider leaving Hong Kong over air pollution
May 6, 2010, 10:54 GMT
Hong Kong - More than one third of Hong Kong parents have considered leaving Hong Kong because of its air pollution, according to a survey Thursday.
Thirty-five per cent of over 500 parents interviewed by a pressure group said they had considered leaving the city to escape its notorious pollution, which 90 per cent said affected their children's health.
Survey author Clean Air Network wants the government to phase out older buses, and to order children to stay at home on days of extremely high pollution.
The group's chief executive officer Joanne Ooi said: 'These findings show that children's health is at risk. The government can no longer delay the fight against air pollution.'
Air pollution from vehicle emissions and factory smog from neighbouring southern China has worsened significantly in Hong Kong over the past 15 years, hitting an all-time high in March.
