Tips for dealing with varicose veins
May 17, 2010, 4:06 GMT
Berlin - Rocking feet forwards and backwards can help prevent varicose veins as the movement activates the leg's muscles and supports the transport of blood back to the heart, according to Germany's Professional Association of Internists.
Prolonged standing or sitting increase the chance of developing varicose veins. If possible, put your feet up while sitting.
Regular exercise is the best way to keep veins healthy. Jobs that involve lots of standing or sitting should be compensated for by cycling or swimming. But sports that involve abrupt movements such as tennis or badminton, as well as athletic sports, can place veins under strain.
Patients with varicose veins should avoid socks or stockings that constrain the leg in one spot. The same applies to wearing tight trousers. Flat-heeled shoes are better than high heels.
Ninety per cent of varicose veins occur in the legs, according to the association. Among the causes are congenital factors such as an inherited weakness of the vein walls or valves, and age.
