Polish soldier returns home after having both hands transplanted
Jul 30, 2010, 16:22 GMT
Warsaw - A soldier who had both of his hands transplanted in the first operation of its kind in Poland has left the hospital and is feeling well, local media reported Friday.
'I feel well, but this is just the beginning,' the Polish soldier said. 'Everything is ahead of me.'
The special forces soldier, whose name was not given, had both his hands transplanted on June 5 in an operation that lasted some 17 hours, TVN 24 reported.
Doctors at the hospital in the south-western Polish town of Trzebnica said the man was already able to open a book and write on a keyboard. But full rehabilitation could take up to three years.
The man lost both his hands during a training exercise when he noticed a fellow soldier was holding an explosive incorrectly. The man grabbed the explosive from the soldier's hand but did not throw it away in time.
