Report: Alcohol now cheaper than water in New Zealand
Oct 14, 2010, 23:43 GMT
Wellington - Alcohol in New Zealand is now cheaper than bottled water, health researchers said in a report released on Friday.
Researchers from Otago University's Wellington campus reported that cask wine was readily on sale for the equivalent of 62 New Zealand cents (47 US cents) a standard drink, beer at 64 cents and bottled wine at 65 cents.
That was cheaper than bottled water - at 67 New Zealand cents for 250 millilitres, an associate professor of public health Nick Wilson and fellow researcher Fiona Gunasekara said in a report published in the New Zealand Medical Journal.
'Our analysis suggests alcohol is now probably the cheapest recreational drug in New Zealand and has become increasingly affordable, at the same time as concern about binge-drinking culture has grown,' Wilson said.
