Slimming centers allegedly rig scales to con Hong Kong dieters
Feb 17, 2011, 1:01 GMT
Hong Kong - Nine people have been arrested after slimming centers in Hong Kong allegedly rigged weighing scales to trick customers, a news report said Thursday.
Six outlets of the Royal Bodyperfect slimming centers were raided by police after customers complained about programmes offering free treatment to dieters who successfully slimmed to a target weight.
They paid deposits of up to 60,000 Hong Kong dollars (7,700 US dollars) but were denied refunds when allegedly rigged weighing scales made them appear heavier than they were during checks.
Nine people were arrested and sets of weighing scales seized from the centers during police raids on Tuesday and Wednesday, the South China Morning Post reported. No one had been charged.
Beauty centers offering rapid weight loss programs are popular in Hong Kong where obesity rates have soared because of the wealthy city's sedentary lifestyles and appetite for fast food.
