Mar 2, 2011, 12:01 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - A Malaysian man who went into seclusion from his family and friends after being told he was HIV-positive won damages Wednesday from a hospital for misdiagnosing him, a newspaper reported.
A high court ruled that the Adventist Hospital and Clinic Services in the northern state of Penang pay A Nageswara 150,000 ringgit (48,390 dollars) in damages for negligence and defamation, The Star said.
Upon hearing the verdict, Nageswara, 54, said he would reunite with his wife and children after 10 years.
Nageswara was told he was HIV-positive when he was admitted to the private hospital in Georgetown in 2001 for a chest injury.
Shocked and ashamed, the father of five immediately fled and hid from his family and friends until years later when he decided to get another blood test to confirm the diagnosis.
The subsequent test found that Nageswara was HIV-negative.
