Germany jails "Doctor Lemon Juice" for four years
Mar 28, 2011, 10:51 GMT
Moenchengladbach, Germany - A German doctor who ran his own hospital was sentenced to four years in prison Monday for harming 25 patients with eccentric procedures that included using lemon juice to disinfect surgical incisions.
Arnold Pier was convicted in Moenchengladbach on two counts of assault causing death, two counts of homicide by negligence and 21 counts of assault.
Witnesses told the court that, instead of using sterile dressings and anti-bacterial drugs, Pier, 54, ordered his private hospital staff to squeeze lemons in a dish and dab the juice on patients' cuts.
In other cases, Pier became muddled and removed healthy organs from patients instead of diseased ones. Because of the malpractice, the court in the western city also struck him off the German register of doctors for four years.
