Taiwan recalls million tainted food items in health scare
May 26, 2011, 12:53 GMT
Taipei - Taiwan's Health Ministry said Thursday it has demanded some 168 food processors recall more than one million items of food and drink items found to have been tainted by cancer-causing plasticizer DEHP.
The plasticizer, which serves as cloudy agent, is commonly used in fruit jelly, yogurt mix powder, juices and other drinks as well as some nutritive food items in Taiwan, ministry officials said.
The suppliers, including many local brand names, were found to have unknowingly used the plasticizer diethylhexylphthalate (DEPH) provided by Yu Sheng Chemical Company or intermediaries agents of the company, following probes by prosecutors, they said.
Kang Jan-jou, director-general of the ministry's Food and Drug Administration, said the government had reported the case to the World Health Organisation in the hope of minimizing possible harm done to people in other countries since some of those products had been exported overseas.
'We have also urged other local suppliers to send their products for tests to prove they are safe for consumption,' Kang said.
