Mutant bacteria blamed for three German baby deaths
Nov 2, 2011, 16:54 GMT
Bremen, Germany - Mutant bacteria have killed three premature babies in a northern German hospital since August, officials said Wednesday, adding that the source of the infections had not been found.
The gut bacteria blamed for the babies' deaths contain an enzyme - known as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) - which makes them immune to common antibiotics.
The hospital ward, in the city of Bremen, has been closed. Several more babies are sick, but not critical.
City health official Joachim Schuster said the germ could have been accidentally spread by either a person or an object.
