UN: Cholera cases reported in Kenya's Dadaab refugee camps
Nov 15, 2011, 19:38 GMT
New York - About 60 cholera cases, including 10 confirmed in laboratory tests, have been detected in Kenya's Dadaab refugee complex, where security conditions have worsened, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said Tuesday.
Conditions in the camp deteriorated further with the risks of waterborne diseases, UNHCR said in Geneva.
The organization said the outbreak of cholera was believed to have started among new arrivals from Somalia or people on their way to Dadaab. The complex of refugee encampments have been flooded by heavy rains, and they were forced to resort to using unsafe water from flooded areas.
UNHCR said Kenya had deployed an additional 100 police to the camps in the last month to increase security. UNHCR has set up centres for severe cholera treatment, working with other UN agencies and the Kenyan government.
