Rest before taking your blood pressure
Berlin (dpa) - Anyone having to take their blood pressure at home themselves should rest for at least three minutes before taking a reading, and a morning reading should be taken before medication is taken.
Norbert Smetak of the association of German cardiologists adds that when using devices attached to the wrist, it is important to raise the arm up to the level of the heart for a correct blood pressure reading to be taken. Smetak also advises always using the arm giving higher blood pressure readings.
Another important factor is to ensure that the cuff fits properly and that it is adjusted to the width of the wrist or the upper arm, depending on how the reading is being taken.
He acknowledges that the upper arm devices are less comfortable and more difficult to use than those made for the wrist, but notes that they provide a more accurate reading.
Taking one's own blood pressure is important for certain groups of patients, as a high morning reading could indicate an increased risk of damage to the heart, brain and kidneys. In these cases, medication often has to be adjusted.
Persistent heartburn sufferers should see doctor
Berlin (dpa) - Occasional bouts of heartburn are no cause for alarm and the symptoms can be treated with over the counter antacid medication. But if the symptoms frequently repeat themselves or persist for more than two weeks without let-up, the patient should see a doctor for an examination, German gastro-intestinal specialists say.
This is because they could result in inflammation or ulcers in the oesophagus. Another possible consequence is oesophageal cancer.
Heartburn and the breaking of acid wind are among the most frequent symptoms of a range of digestive ailments that make themselves known through chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain and flatulence.
Restlessness and irritability could indicate Alzheimer's
Berlin (dpa) - Incipient Alzheimer's Disease sometimes shows itself through a behavioural change, including restlessness, nervousness, melancholy and irritability.
Previously mild-tempered individuals start to react suspiciously to others or with animosity, according to the German association of geriatric psychiatry and psychotherapy.
These symptoms cannot always be distinguished from normal ageing characteristics. If friends and relatives observe indications of dementia of this kind, they should seek the advice of a psychiatrist. Early recognition of Alzheimer's leads to more effective treatment.
